Van Andel Living Shores Aquarium, John Ball Zoo
Grand Rapids, Michigan

The Living Shores exhibit lets visitors immerse themselves in three diverse coastline environments-the lakes and shores of Michigan, the desert shoreline of Patagonia, and the rocky shores of the Pacific Northwest. All three environments are equidistant from the equator but contain ecosystems with stunning differences. One highlight of this exhibit is the Magellanic penguins that seem to "fly" underwater as visitors watch. Hands-on tidepool exhibits let visitors touch sea urchins and sea stars for themselves.
